Gold for Mürsbach

Not far from Bamberg lies Mürsbach. In 2013 this tiny village won the 24th National Competition "Village with a Future" ("Unser Dorf hat Zukunft") and was awarded with a gold medal. What makes Mürsbach so special is the variety of timbered houses that shape the image of the village.

Located between Bamberg and Coburg alongside a popular bicycle route Mürsbach is always a pleasant stopover with the brewery Sonnenbräu.

Brewery Tour in the District of Bamberg

Servus and hello!

Being famous for its brewery tradition Bamberg accommodates nine breweries in the urban area and 61 in the rural district. If your schedule allows it you should definitely visit some of the smaller breweries outside the city which give you an impression of suburban lifestyle.

The website of the Fränkische Toskana offers a map of a 13-brewery-trip in the east of Bamberg, found here. In total it is 32 kilometers (20 miles) long and is manageable by foot or bicycle. A brochure provides more information about particular breweries, sadly though it's in German.

Zum Sternla [Restaurant]

Servus and hello!

After a week of non-activity here I'd like to promote a traditional restaurant in the city center of Bamberg (which is not the Schlenkerla). I'm talking about the eatery Zum Sternla that is located in the Lange Straße 46 and still within a stone's throw of the usual tourist walkabouts. So if you are willing to spend an extra march of three minutes from the Gabelmann you will be rewarded with good and solid meals. Prices are under 11€ and the restaurant offers extra dishes for the little ones which cost around 5€.
The menu in the Sternla is written in Franconian dialect with standard German additions. Don't be put off by it and just ask one of the lovely waitresses for a translation, they will help you out.

Opening hours:
Mon – Sun: 10 a.m. – 11 p.m.
(reservations  recommended on weekends)

Carnival / Fasching

Helau and hello!

Last weekend carnival (here also called Fasching) took over the streets and squares of Franconia. Public spaces were filled with clowns, cowboys and human carrots. Everybody who enjoys a little drink or humans in disguise will be delighted by the so called fifth season.
Usually a Faschingsumzug (carnival parade) is presented by every community and consists of several floats. Although we might not have the fanciest floats like Cologne or Mainz the people's exuberance is just as great as elsewhere.
The parade in Memmelsdorf near Bamberg is legendary. This year 67 floats joined in there and made it one of the biggest parades in the region. Every year the parade is on sunday before Rose Monday. To get a small impression take a look at some pictures and you know what I mean:

The local newspaper Fränkischer Tag posted a picture gallery of the parade in Bamberg on March 4th 2014. click here

See you next week.

Assignment

Servus and Hello!

Information in English on Upper Franconia is rare. Therefore this blog is dedicated to all English speaking visitors to Upper Franconia who want to experience Franconian tradition and events.

Being born and raised in Bamberg I'd like to promote this beautiful region. So I thought of putting out some insight information about restaurants, events and locations which are not listed in the web. The quantity of information about my homeland in English really is devastating....

I will try to post at least once a week and present some news. Mostly the focus is set on undisclosed locations but may vary depending on my free time.
If a topic already is described elsewhere I will link the post with the reference. In addition to a short summary of the presented topic I will rate important factors like "English skills", "Hospitality" or "Pricing" at this location. This might help visitors to decide in favor of a travel destination.

Also, my plan is to create different categories later on. But first this blog needs some posts...

Best regards
